Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly of the urogenital tract where the opening of the urethra, i.e. the channel that conducts urine, is located abnormally, i.e. at the tip of the male genital organ. Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies of the urogenital system in male children, with an incidence of 1 in 125 male children. Given that the incidence of hypospadias is constantly increasing, this issue is of great interest to parents whose babies face this condition. Hypospadias is diagnosed immediately after the child is born, while the treatment is usually surgical and recommended after the age of one year. For all questions related to hypospadias and its treatment, we talked to Dr.
Risto Simeonov, specialist in pediatric surgery. What is hypospadias and what are the reasons that cause its appearance? Dr. Simeonov: Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly of the Iraq Email List urogenital tract where the opening of the urethra, i.e. the channel that conducts urine, is located abnormally, i.e. at the tip of the male genital organ. This means that in this condition the opening is not found in its anatomical place at the top of the male organ, but in an abnormal place. At what age is it usually seen in children? Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies of the urogenital system in male children, with an incidence of 1 in 125 male children. Dr. Simeonov: Hypospadias is noticed immediately after the birth of the child during the examination performed by the pediatrician, where it can be easily noticed that the external meatus of the urethra is not in the anatomical place.
Hypospadias in the first months of the child's life does not create a problem, since the baby can urinate normally. Therefore, surgical intervention to correct this condition is usually planned after the age of one year. The surgical intervention is not urgent, therefore it is good that the male sexual organ has a certain shape and size when the intervention is performed, so that the new urethra can be formed from the sexual organ itself. What types of hypospadias are there? Dr. Simeonov: Hypospadias can be 50% anterior (coronal, subcoronal), 30% middle (penile) and 20% posterior (penoscrotal, scrotal and perineal). The most severe types of hypospadias are scrotal and perineal, when the opening of the urethra is between the two testicles, in the scrotum. This type of hypospadias requires surgical intervention, but sometimes there is a need to use the buccal mucosa, that is, the mucosa from the inner part of the lip, to form the urethral canal.
